Colonel Douglas A. Sims II

77th Colonel of the Regiment

Colonel Douglas A. Sims II, was commissioned an Infantry officer in 1991 following graduation from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.  He holds a Bachelor of Science from West Point, and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University.

Colonel Sims was a rifle and scout platoon leader in the 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Ft. Bragg, NC, and a Ranger platoon leader in the 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Ft. Lewis, WA.  As a captain, he commanded companies in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, Ft. Richardson, AK, and the 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), Ft. Myer, VA.  His field grade time consisted of service as the battalion executive officer for 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, and as the brigade operations officer for 1st Brigade (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), 25th Infantry Division, Ft. Lewis, WA, and Mosul, Iraq.  Following his assignment to 1/25 SBCT, he served at Headquarters, United States Special Operations Command, in Tampa, FL.  In July 2008, he joined the 2d Cavalry Regiment as the Regiment’s deputy commander during combat operations in Diyala Province and took command of the Regiment’s 1st Squadron in January 2009.  Under his leadership, 1st Squadron deployed to the Republic of Georgia and prepared for and deployed to combat operations in southern Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011.  Following his departure from 1st Squadron, Colonel Sims completed an Army War College fellowship in the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In addition to his Army War College fellowship, Colonel Sims is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KA, and numerous other military schools and courses.  His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star. Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist’s Badge, and Pathfinder Badge.
