The Persian Gulf War

On November 8, 1990, the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment was ordered to deploy to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield. Serving as the corps reconnaissance force for VII Corps, the regiment spearheaded the coalition's main armored thrust into Iraq during the commencement of ground operations on February 23, 1991.

On February 26, 1991, the regiment engaged and defeated elements of the Iraqi Republican Guard's Tawakalna Division during the Battle of 73 Easting. Utilizing advanced thermal imaging, GPS navigation, and coordinated tank and cavalry fighting vehicle maneuvers, the regiment destroyed the enemy's defensive line in adverse weather conditions. Over the course of the 100-hour ground campaign, the 2nd ACR advanced more than 250 kilometers, destroyed 159 enemy tanks and 260 armored vehicles, and captured over 2,000 enemy prisoners of war while establishing the maneuvering space for the heavy armored divisions of VII Corps. The regiment was awarded two campaign streamers and the Valorous Unit Award for its performance.

The preparation phase during Operation Desert Shield presented significant logistical and environmental hurdles. Prior to the ground offensive, the regiment spent months in the remote Saudi Arabian desert conducting intensive gunnery and maneuver training. Operating in this austere environment required meticulous maintenance of complex electronic and mechanical systems to mitigate severe degradation caused by fine sand and extreme heat, ensuring total combat readiness.

Following the immediate ceasefire, the regiment established defensive screens in southern Iraq and Kuwait to ensure compliance with the cessation of hostilities. During this period, they assisted in the systematic destruction of captured enemy munitions and the processing of displaced civilian populations. In the spring of 1991, the unit redeployed to Germany, successfully completing their first major combat operation of the modern mechanized era.
