The Second Seminole War

The 2nd Regiment of Dragoons was officially established by an Act of Congress on May 23, 1836, to provide the United States Army with a specialized mounted force capable of operating in the challenging terrain of the Florida Territory. The regiment saw its initial combat action in June 1836 near Micanopy, Florida, when Company D engaged Seminole forces prior to the arrival of the main body of the regiment in January 1837.

Operating in the dense and swampy environment of the Everglades, the Dragoons utilized mobile, proactive patrol tactics to locate and engage Seminole forces, moving away from the static defense of established fortifications. To enhance their capabilities, the regiment formed a specialized detachment of sharpshooters equipped with the early Colt Paterson revolving carbine. On September 9, 1837, regimental elements, operating alongside Florida volunteer militia, captured a major Seminole encampment and secured the capture of King Phillip, a prominent Seminole leader. The regiment's sustained operations throughout the campaign earned the unit a red and black battle streamer, establishing its foundational legacy of mobility and adaptability.

The operational environment of Florida presented severe logistical and environmental challenges. Heat, disease, and impassable terrain often proved as formidable as the opposing forces. To maintain pressure on the Seminoles, the Dragoons adapted their supply lines, utilizing small riverine boats and relying heavily on foraging to sustain long-range patrols deep into the interior, demonstrating a high degree of fieldcraft and resilience.

In the concluding phases of the war, the regiment operated under the command of seasoned frontier officers who perfected the integration of mounted, dismounted, and riverine tactics. Following the cessation of primary hostilities in 1842, the 2nd Dragoons were transferred to the western frontier, bringing the tactical experience gained in Florida to their new mission of securing the expanding territorial borders of the United States.
