A Texas native, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew R. VanGilder attended the University of Texas at San Antonio graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and commissioned in the Field Artillery Branch.
LTC VanGilder first served as a Platoon Leader, Battery XO, and Battalion Fire Direction Officer with the 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment, 75th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill Oklahoma. The Battalion deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III from January 2005 - January 2006.
Upon completion of the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, LTC VanGilder deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as a combat advisor in Southern Afghanistan from December 2008 to December 2009. Following his time as a Combat Advisor, LTC VanGilder was assigned to the 162nd Infantry Brigade at Fort Polk, LA where he commanded two separate Companies.
After Command, LTC VanGilder was assigned to the JRTC Operations Group as an Observer Controller/Trainer (OC/T) from 2011 - 2013. During his time as an OC/T he held positions as both the Reconnaissance Squadron FSO Trainer and the Reconnaissance Squadron S3 trainer.
Following attendance at the United States Naval War College from June 2013 to June 2014, LTC VanGilder was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division Artillery at JBLM, WA. While there he served as the DIVARTY Fires and Effects Coordinator, the Battalion XO of 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, the DIVARTY S3, and the DIVARTY DCO.
From June 2018 to June 2020, LTC VanGilder was assigned to Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, KY where he served as a Field Artillery Branch Major’s Assignment Officer.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two oak leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (two oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist’s Badge.
LTC VanGilder is married with three children.
