LTC Joseph M. Byerly

4th Squadron

Commander

LTC Joe Byerly commissioned in 2003 from University of North Georgia as an Armor Officer. Following completion of training at Fort Knox, he was assigned to 5-15th Cavalry Regiment as an executive officer. He then joined 4-2 Cavalry Regiment at Fort Lewis (later reflagged 2-1 Cavalry Regiment) and served as a scout platoon leader from 2005-2008, deploying to Diyala, Iraq as part of the Surge.

After completing the Captain’s Career Course at Fort Knox, KY, he served as an assistant operations officer and Troop Commander in 3-7 Cavalry and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following redeployment, he took command of HHC/1-64 AR.

Following company command, he served as an instructor at the Cavalry Leader's Course at Fort Benning, GA before attending the Naval War College in Newport, RI. From 2015-2017, LTC Byerly served as the brigade planner for 1-4 SBCT, operations officer and executive officer in 2-1 Cavalry Regiment, and Brigade executive officer for 1-4 SBCT.

From 2017-2022, Joe served in multiple positions within Joint Special Operations Command that included special advisor to the commander of Joint Special Operations Command, the commander of Resolute Support Mission, Afghanistan, and the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.

LTC Byerly’s major awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award. He is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Modern War Institute at the United States Military Academy.

LTC Byerly is married with 2 children.
